The green gap is a significant barrier to achieving the full efficiency of LEDs. Our technology overcomes the internal electric fields that cause the green gap in more conventional LEDs, thus significantly improving their efficiency in the longer wave lengths.
Kubos’ world first technology has the potential to produce high-end, lower cost, highly efficient and healthier LEDs which are compatible with commercial processing lines.
Our technology can provide a fundamental advantage wherever RGB LEDs are required. The application in micro-LEDs could be transformative in breaking into the mainstream market.
Green and Amber LEDs are 2-3 times less efficient than their blue and red counterparts. This is due to technical limitations of both conventional nitride and phosphide technologies causing the quantum efficiencies to fall off rapidly. The significant drop in efficiency in these spectral ranges, a phenomenon referred to as the “Green Gap” reduces the performance and increases the cost and size of RGB lighting and displays. Kubos aims to overcome this fundamental barrier by improving the efficiency of the LEDs in the long wavelength region of the visible spectrum by using cubic group-III nitrides for device fabrication, hence enabling significant cost savings.
Kubos is developing LEDs in cubic Gallium Nitride (GaN), which overcomes the internal electric fields that contribute to the Green Gap in conventional hexagonal-GaN LEDs, significantly improving their efficiency. Our IP enables the growth of cubic-GaN on large diameter wafers which can be used as a direct replacement for existing substrates in the LED fabrication process.
Kubos’ technology can provide a fundamental advantage wherever RGB LEDs are required, enabling the full potential efficiency of warm white or tunable RGB lighting, displays and high-intensity lights to be realised. The application in micro-LEDs could be transformative in breaking into the mainstream market. cubic-GaN LED stacks can directly substitute conventional substrates, enabling chip and product developers to easily take advantage of the technology.
